A method and an apparatus for adapting a transmitter equalization coefficient based on receiver gain adaptation are provided. The equalization coefficient of a transmitter communicating with a receiver through a channel determines the gain value of the amplifier in the receiver. When the gain value is not satisfied with the upper limit or lower limit of an amplifier, one or more controls are prevented for the equalization coefficient of the transmitter. A gain control process includes the up and down request of the equalization coefficient in the transmitter. One or more flags are selectively set according to the limit of the amplifier.
