A throttle for the hydraulic circuit of a programmed machine tool or follower mechanism has a circular housing (1) with a groove (5) around part of it, into which fits an insert (6). The latter is of a higher linear coefficient of expansion then the material of the housing. The housing and insert are ring shaped and enclose a rotating cylindrical member (2), leaving a gap (7) between. The width (h) of this gap is given by a formula relating the viscosity of the fluid handled, the length of the gap, the density of the fluid, and the pressure drop inside.
