The feeder (1) has sheet detecting units (61) detecting one or multiple edges (6.2) of an upper sheet (6). A mark is printed on the upper sheet or an edge in a print image of the upper sheet. A control unit (15) controls a suction and transport unit (60). The sheet detecting units and the suction and transport unit are arranged over a stack (6.1) and data-communicatively connected with the control unit. The suction and transport unit is controllable by the control unit such that underlapped sheet current with defined underlapped flaking is produced. An independent claim is also included for a method for separating a sheet from a stack and providing the separated sheet for a sheet processing machine.
