PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a structure to appropriately read an image of a document in accordance with thickness of the document.SOLUTION: An image reader includes: an upper transfer member 8 as a first body section, and a lower transfer member 31 as a second body section, which are oppositely arranged and in which a part between facing surfaces 8a and 31a becomes a transfer path for transferring a document; and interval change means for changing an interval between the facing surfaces 8a and 31a. The interval between the lower transfer member 31 and the upper transfer member 8 is detected by a distance measurement sensor 514 as interval detecting means. A main control section 501 as control means sets one of a reading condition of an image reading unit 6 as an image reading section and a processing condition of an image which is read in accordance with the interval detected by the distance measurement sensor 514.
