The method involves operating an exhaust gas sensor (17) in a defined target-internal resistance by carrying out control of a heating power of a heating element. A deviation of a nominal temperature corresponding to the target-internal resistance is detected. Measure for sensor aging is determined from the determined deviation between an actual ceramic temperature of a measuring cell and an expected ceramic temperature. A Nernst-voltage is corrected as an output signal of the sensor according to the aging measure. The corrected output signal is used for lambda determination and/or control. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating an exhaust gas sensor in an exhaust duct of an internal combustion engine.
