<p>1525930 Mixing gases and liquid IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 Nov 1975 [4 Dec 1974] 52430/74 Heading B1C [Also in Division C6] Apparatus for circulating a mixture comprising a liquid e.g. a bacterial culture containing a hydrocarbon or oxygenated hydrocarbon substrate, and a gas (air) consists of a riser 1 and downcomer 4, the lower section of the riser being of greater cross-sectional area than that of the upper section, a gas disengagement section 3 in which the liquid flows downwardly at a velocity not exceeding 0.2 metres per second, and gas spargers 5 and 8, and the riser downcomer and gas disengagement section are contained within the same outer shell which encloses spaces above and below the riser/downcomer/gas disengagement section system and has an overall diameter of at least 4 metres. Other preferred features are: The cross-sectional area of the lower section of the riser is within the range three to six times that of the upper section; a heat exchanger may be located in the riser or downcomer, or below these; and provision is made for the injection of gas into the riser, downcomer and gas disengagement section at a plurality of positions. The height of the system is preferably within the range 30 to 50 metres. A foam separator or cyclone may be fitted in the space within the shell above the system.</p> |
