Aq. coating resin dispersions are comprised of (1) crosslinkable alkyd and/or aminoplast resins and (2) reactive surface active agents made by (a) addn. of propylene oxide to (cyclo)aliphatic amino gp. or OH gp. contg. cpds. and (b) addn. of ethylene oxide (EO) and/or glycidol. Pref., the propylene oxide is added first, and the prod. contains 3-20 OH gps/mol. Prods. are water-based baking enamels which are made without using volatile amines or other toxic components. The reactive surface active agents give cured coating films with increased hardness and water resistance compared with prior art polyglycol ether surfactants.
