PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for detecting disconnection of an overhead line that are capable of immediately detecting the disconnection thereof without being affected by electric noise and without requiring a power supply on a track.SOLUTION: The apparatus for detecting disconnection of an overhead line comprises an optical cable 2 wired so as to pass through a wiring fitting 20 which retains end portions of overhead lines 13 and 15 being objects of disconnection detection, an optical cable disconnecting mechanism 3 which is arranged in the wiring fitting 20 and disconnects the optical cable 2 by using a change in tension applied to the wiring fitting 20 as a result of disconnection of the overhead lines 13 and 15, and a disconnection detector 4 which is connected to the optical cable 2, and detects the disconnection of the overhead lines 13 and 15 by detecting disconnection of the optical cable 2. |
