Provided are dye-sensitized solar cells with excellent photoelectric conversion efficiency that can conserve the amount of catalyst used, and wherein inexpensive metal materials that exhibit excellent corrosion-resistance are used as the counterelectrode in the electrolyte solution of the dye-sensitized solar cells. In the dye-sensitized solar cells provided with a photoelectrode that has a semiconductor layer carrying a sensitizing dye on the surface of a transparent conductive material, an electrolyte solution, and a counterelectrode, the counterelectrode is constructed with a material wherein a catalyst film layer is formed on the surface of a substrate made of stainless steel comprising Cr: 16 mass% or greater and Mo: 0.3 mass% or greater, and the semiconductor layer of the photoelectrode and the catalyst film layer face each other with the electrolyte solution therebetween. The stainless steel substrate of the counterelectrode ideally has pitted recesses of mean opening diameter D: 5 µm or less on the surface at a surface area ratio of 10% or more. |
