The method involves conveying a liquid medium, a medium-gas mixture or a gas over activation of a feed pump (10) with a closed metering unit (7), and activating a scavenger pump (20) and/or a switching valve for recirculation of the medium to eliminate gas volumes in a pump system that comprises the feed pump, the scavenger pump and the switching valve. The scavenger pump is actuated such that a small low pressure is formed on a pressure side of the feed pump. The elimination of the gas volumes is performed according to a low tank level or a cold starting process. The feed pump is designed as a lifting piston pump. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising a set of instructions for executing a method for operating a pumping system (2) a computer program product comprising a set of instructions for executing a method for operating a pumping system.
