The device (100) has a hold-down attachment (102) provided in a conveying direction of a plastic label (103) downstream to a heating device (101). A label material is superficially melted by heat produced from the heating device, where the label and/or a container (104) to be labeled are heated at predetermined locations before applying the label to the container to be labeled. The label and/or the container to be labeled are pressed together for fastening the label at the container. The heating device comprises narrow-band light sources or infrared sources or UV sources for heating purposes. An independent claim is also included for a method for applying plastic labels on containers.
