Salts of hetero-polyanion contg. tungsten and arsenic - useful in human and veterinary medicine as antivirals, e.g. against leukaemia

The use of pharmaceuticals of cpds. contg. the anion of formula (I) As4W4oO14o 28- is new. Esp. the results of formula Mx+(AS3+)4(W6)4o(O2-)146 (28-x)- m1+(28-x) (II) are used. In the formula M is >=1 alkali(ne earth), transition (esp. first series)or post-transition metal of columns 3A, 4A and VA; the total charge, x, on m is =27. m1 = monovalent metal, e.g. alkali, or NH4). Pref. M are Na, K, Ba, Ag, Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Co or N;m1 is esp. Na or K. (II) are new provided m and m1 are not both Na or both K. Cpds. contg. (I) antiviral activity and are useful in human or veterinary medicine for prophylactic or curative treatment. They are esp. effective for controlling herpes, leukaemia and sarcoma viruses. Typically the dose is 10-50 mg/kg. given intravenously or intraperitoneally in saline; at these doses no acute or chronic toxicity and no side effects were detected.
