The burst proof automobile door lock uses a recoil sprung pivoting forked plate bolt (107) which engages a bar staple (104) mounted on a door pillar. A spring loaded lever ratchet (115) secures the bolt in the active position, a transverse fixing bolt sleeve (116) forming a fulcrum of the ratchet. The ratchet has two active tooth shaped edge zones, the first (130) engaging the rear arm (114) of the bolt, at closure, and the second (124) locating a nominal distance behind the leading arm (113). The contact (132, 130) zones of the ratchet and the bolt may be perpendicular to lines passing through the ratchet fulcrum (116) and may extend to intersect the bolt fulcrum (108). Torsion springs (109, 122) may be utilised on both the bolt and the ratchet sleeves (108, 116) also serving as inter-wall struts for the bolt housing (101).
