PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a suction head which enables dredging to be performed with a high mud content by improving the property of making a suction opening follow a sediment surface on the bottom of the water, while preventing the clogging of the suction opening, when dredging for pit excavation is performed; and to provide a dredging method. SOLUTION: A transport pipe 6 equipped with a suction means is connected to the suction head 1 which has the bottom surface of a casing 2 formed into a shape that the central is protruded downward; the suction head 1 is suspended from a floating body 8 via a wire 9; and the dredging is performed by sucking a fluid, containing sediment on the bottom of the water, from the porous suction opening 3 provided at the center of the bottom surface of the casing 2, while adjusting the upper and lower positions of the suction head 1 by unwinding and winding a wire 9 through the drive of a winch 10.
