A collapsing mechanism for umbrellas includes a transmission member 130 and a movable F-shaped member 120 which is engaged with the transmission member via a ratchet 130B and pawl 124. An operation member comprises a pivotal plate 142 (comprised of a first plate 142A and a second plate 142B) and a pin 144. When the umbrella is opened, the pivotal plate 142A contacts the bar 120 of F-shaped member 120, and prevents the ratchet mechanism from working. However, when closing the umbrella, plate 142A is disengaged from the bar and the ratchet mechanism may operate to stop any sudden rebound and possible injury to users or those around them. Thus the user does not need to complete the collapsing action at one time. |
