A controller (2) for controlling an operating characteristic of an amplifier circuit (4) comprising at least a first amplifier (6) and a second amplifier (8) coupled to an output (10) of the first amplifier (6), wherein the first amplifier (6) is powered from a first power supply (12) by a first energy supply signal (14) and the second amplifier (8) is powered from a second power supply (16) by a second energy supply signal (18). The controller comprises a monitoring interface (20) operable to receive monitoring information indicative of a signal characteristic of a signal amplified by the amplifier circuit and a control interface (22) operable to provide a control signal (24) being operable to modify at least one of the group of the first energy supply signal (14) and the second energy supply signal (18) such that a power efficiency of the amplifier circuit (4) is increased.
