The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device capable of preventing gamma (Gamma) from distortion caused by the application of content-based adaptive luminance control (CABC) and reducing power consumption, and to a method for driving the same. The method for driving the a liquid crystal display device displaying images by applying content-based adaptive luminance control (CABC), according to the embodiment of the present invention comprises: a step of calculating the average gray level of the inputted image data; a step of selecting a new value for CMB, suitable for the average gray level of the image data, among a plurality of CMB (CABC minimum brightness) values stored in the memory; a step of generating a brightness data based on the value appropriate to the average gray level of the image data; and a step of generating gamma voltages on the basis of the luminance data and controlling the luminance of the backlight.
