[Class 60] A lapping-machine having a base and a lapping wheel to which a combined rotating and gyrating movement is imparted and having a plane operative face has a work head including a work driving spindle positively rotated by a spindle-driving mechanism within said head, the said spindle being rotatably and slidably mounted so that a yieldable work-driving member carried by said spindle is normally pressed, preferably by means of a compression spring, into frictional engagement with the work piece to rotate the same and also maintain it in engagement with the lapping wheel, the spindle being arranged to be manually moved, against the pressure of the spring, out of operative position into an inoperative position in which the spindle is out of driving connection with the driving mechanism. A lap 30 is supported on a rotating platen 11 and is given a gyratory motion by eccentrically-mounted driving pins 31, 32 engaging apertures in the plate as described in Specification 254,919, [Class 60]. A normally stationary work-head 49 is supported by bearing on a vertically adjustable sleeve 48. Through the sleeve 48 runs a shaft 75 driven by a pulley 74 and driving, through gears 83, 84, 86, 87, a sleeve 88 journalled in the work-head 49, which sleeve serves as a support for a work-driving spindle 52 driven by a pin 89 engaging a slot 89a in the sleeve. Other circularly arranged workholders are driven from the sleeve 88 through gearing 90, 91, 93 and sleeves 94. Each workdriving spindle has a soft rubber cup 61 held in frictional engagement with the work-piece by a spring 62 to rotate it in contact with the lapping wheel 30. The member 61 is raised from the work-piece by lifting a knob 95 which raises the spindle 52 and disengages it from the driving sleeve 88. The work-head 49 tends to rotate, but is prevented from so doing by a pawl engaging a lug 105 or 107 on the head ; to facilitate unloading, however, the pawl is lifted to allow the head to rotate a desired amount.
