PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tantalum oxide particle which achieves both high crystallinity and a reduction in the size of a primary particle.SOLUTION: The tantalum oxide particle according to the present invention is characterized by having a primary particle diameter of 70 nm or less and a light absorptivity of 0.32 or less at a wavelength of 1800 nm as measured by diffuse reflection spectrum. The tantalum oxide particle has high photocatalytic activity and is useful for high activation of TaON being a visible light-responsive photocatalyst by a nitriding treatment.
