The method involves detecting (S1) a cylinder pressure inside a combustion space or a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine to generate a cylinder pressure signal. The generated cylinder pressure signal is processed (S2) for different phases of the engine cycle of the internal combustion engine to provide the cylinder pressure derivative signals or -integration signals for each phase of the engine cycle.
