This invention relates to a process for preparing high purity bisphenol A comprising feeding continuously phenol and acetone in the presence of a hydrochloric acid catalyst into a reactor in a first stage and reacting phenol and acetone until the acetone coversion is in the range of 20 - 60 mol%, continuously removing the first reaction product from the reactor in the first stage, feeding the first reaction product into a reactor of batch type in a second stage and completing the reaction of phenol and acetone to obtain a second reaction product and removing unreacted phenol, water formed by the reaction and hydrochloric acid from the second reaction product and recovering bisphenol A.
