An arrangement and devices for gas removal and dechlorination of organic wastes such as domestic refuse, sewage sludge or a mixture of the two contain a gas removal zone in an indirectly heated reactor operated with exclusion of oxygen, for example a hollow-screw reactor with hollow screws heated via liquid heat carriers and double-walled housing walls; downstream of the gas removal zone, a dechlorination zone is provided, through which the carbonisation gas flows once or several times through the degassed carbonised material (the carbonisation coke) with intimate mixing. The dechlorination zone can also be arranged in a dechlorination reactor provided immediately downstream of the carbonisation reactor. <IMAGE>
