Provided is an image encoding method for encoding multi-viewpoint video, in which the following are included: a determination step (S101) for determining, using a table (T1) and from a level signal (126) indicating an encoding-processing level, a maximum intra-screen pixel count (127) and a maximum buffer size (128) which is the maximum number of reference candidate images in non-multi-viewpoint encoding; a first calculation step (S102) which uses the maximum intra-screen pixel count (127), the image size of input images (125), and the scale factor of multi-viewpoint video encoding to calculate a maximum number of views (129) which is the maximum number of reference candidate views used in inter-view prediction encoding; and a second calculation step (S103) which uses the maximum number of views (129) and the maximum buffer size (128) to calculate an MVC maximum buffer size (130) which is the maximum number of reference candidate images in multi-viewpoint view encoding.
