VISION BASED OCCUPANCY DETECTION SYSTEM AND METHOD

The present invention relates to a occupancy detection system and method for use in lighting/HVAC control. The system uses the vision based algorithm to detect human head-top circles in top view videos captured by ceiling mounted camera. The color images converted to grayscale images and gradient filter are applied to find gradient vectors at each point of the image. The gradient vector then propagated backwards to find the center candidate. The center point accumulation and homogeneity constraint are used in combination with gradient back propagation to find the unique center candidate for near circular objects like human head.
