A fault detection method that comprises the steps of collecting operational parameters of the optical network, collecting information about the structure of the optical network, providing diagnosis outputs by a diagnosis engine analyzing the structure information and the operational parameters, and deriving optical network faults from the diagnosis outputs. The collected operational parameters and the collected structure information are preferably stored in a database (DB). The operational parameters are related to equipment (type), Quality-of-Service (BER) and/or architecture (ID) of the optical network. The optical network faults derived from the diagnosis outputs may concern equipment issues, interoperability problems and/or physical defects. The diagnosis engine generates the diagnosis outputs by using decision trees, Bayesian network techniques and/or multivariate classification techniques. |
