PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for evaluating the suppression of a half-dry smell, in which a half-dry smell inhibitory action by a test material can be evaluated with high accuracy and simplicity.SOLUTION: A method for evaluating the suppression of a half-dry smell comprises: contacting microorganisms producing a half-dry smell-causing substance with a test material in the presence of sebum stain components, detecting the expression of at least one type of genes selected from a group which consists of fatty acid desaturase and &bgr;-oxidation-related enzyme genes derived from the microorganisms, and evaluating the half-dry smell inhibitory action of the test material on the basis of the change of the expression level of the at least one type of genes; and detecting the expression of the at least one type of genes using a particular oligonucleotide pair.
