The endoscopic instrument has an elongate shaft (1) and a distal instrument head (4) which is controlled from the proximal instrument end, where a joint (6) is formed in the shaft or between the distal shaft end and the instrument head. A unit is provided for pivoting a distal joint part with respect to a proximal joint part. A transmission unit is formed for transmitting a control function of the proximal instrument end to the instrument head. The transmission unit has an epicyclic gear, whose central axis coincides with a joint axis (7).
