PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer electrolyte for a fuel cell, having a high ion exchange capacity region and high conductivity.SOLUTION: The polymer electrolyte is obtained by introducing a sulfonic acid group into a region shown by the formula (1) or a derivative thereof and comprises an electrolyte region having an ion exchange capacity of 3.0 meq./g or more. -[Ar(R)(Ph)(X)]- (1) (In the formula, Ar represents a benzene ring having 4 to 6 substituents. Ph represents a phenyl group bonded to Ar. Xrepresents a linking group selected from -O-, -S- and -NH- which are bonded to Ar and may be the same or different from each other when a plurality thereof are present.
