A modular building lifting system 11 comprising a pair of stiff, elongate structural modules 12, each elongate structural module 12 having length and height and thickness, the length being substantially the same as the length of the building module 15 to be lifted or longer, the height being small relative to the length and the thickness being substantially smaller than the height, the length providing an upper bound and a lower bound to the elongate structural module, the upper and lower bounds being aligned substantially parallel to each other, the two elongate structural modules being spaced apart by a spreader system extending from proximate the upper bounds of each structural module 12 and supporting adjustable building module connection means 16 extending from the lower bound and adapted to be adjustably connected to a building module 15 to be lifted.
