The invention relates to a method and a device for filling a motor vehicle with fuel at a filling station. The method consists in the fact that a blocking system (4) is activated at the latest when the filling process begins, and the said blocking system (4) prevents the motor vehicle moving forwards and backwards. The method also permits the required amount to be paid at an automatic pay till (10) located near to the motor vehicle and for the blocking effect of the blocking system (4) to be automatically eliminated after the payment process has ended. The device (1) is formed by a passage (3) through which a motor vehicle can travel, in the area of which passage (3) the blocking system (4) is arranged.
