The system has fault current indicators (2a-2C) for a phase conductor of an overhead line. Each indicator includes a unit for detection of a fault current arising in the phase conductor and for outputting reporting data, and wireless modules (6a-6c) for wireless transfer of data to a remotely lying control center (4) via remote connections (10a-10c). Low-power wireless modules (12a-12c) transfer the data between the indicators via short-distance remote connections (14a-14c). One of the indicators commonly transmits the data of the indicators via the wireless modules and the remote connections. The remote connections are wide area network connections. The short-distance remote connections are wireless personal area network connections.
