A sole 10 suitable for footwear comprises an elongate base (12, figure 1) shaped to conform with the shape of a foot of a wearer, and which has a pattern of blocks 15 defining a tread pattern formed on the underside surface of the sole, and a plurality of spaced flexible resilient cleats 16 spaced around the perimeter of at least part the base. The cleats 16 have a hardness greater than that of the base and the blocks 15. Each cleat 16 has one or more flanks (16a, 16b, figure 12) at a distal end remote from the base. The flanks are positioned and arranged relative to each other to present a first set of flanks (16a, figure 12) that lie transverse to the direction of the wearer when side-stepping, and a second set of flanks (16b, figure 12) that lie transverse to the direction of the wearer when walking forwards or backwards. The flanks of each cleat 16 are interconnected by sloping surfaces that face away from the flanks. |
