The system has each function setter (1-4) assigned the first light area (5-8) having intensity which depends on the setting of the corresponding function setter. Each function setter also has the second light area assigned to it with intensity kept constant to the average intensity of the first area in order to act as a reference. The light sources are LEDs combined with plastics parts to give a diffuse area of light. Alternatively the areas may be LCDs. The colour tone of the first area may depend on the setting. Similarly for the second area as a reference.
