PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform focus adjustment in a predetermined focus detection area and perform stable focus adjustment even when the focus detection area is set on a face detected from a picked-up image to perform focus adjustment. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus detects a subject to be focused, from images successively picked up by an imaging means that includes an imaging optical system including a focus lens. Also, the imaging apparatus detects the focusing state of the imaging optical system in the focus detection area, and moves the imaging optical system on the basis of the detected focusing state. In addition, the imaging apparatus stores the position of the imaging system before the imaging system is moved on the basis of the detected focusing state (S504).
