<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of correcting color shift, without using a temperature sensor and capable of smoothly performing an image forming operation. <P>SOLUTION: The CPU of the image forming apparatus performs a color shift correction operation with a predetermined updating period. The CPU estimates temperature (present estimated temperature) inside an optical device and temperature (next estimated temperature) inside the optical device when an operation is continued at the drive rate of the optical device, based on the drive rate of the optical device (S201). The CPU determines whether or not the variation of the next estimated temperature from temperature when correction is performed at the last time is predetermined temperature or more (S203). When the variation is the predetermined temperature or more, the CPU performs color shift inspection processing. The CPU allows an image forming part to output a first pattern (S205) and detects the color shift in the first pattern (S207). When the color shift is detected, the CPU performs correction processing.
