<p>Surgical procedures involving diathermy result in the creation of quantities of smoke. This smoke is noxious and can have live viruses in it. To prevent the smoke leaving the operative site and reaching the surgeon and other theatre staff a smoke evacuator is provided which includes a dome (28) of transparent material with a suction pipe (36) leading to the space below the dome. The suction pipe can be connected to the vacuum system of the operating theatre. The dome can form a magnifying glass and the inlet to the suction pipe can have the inlet end skew with respect to the axis of the pipe.</p> |
