Preparing hydrocarbons from carbon dioxide and hydrogen, comprises reacting carbon dioxide with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst. The catalyst comprises at least one alkali metal, and (i) 10 wt.%, preferably 15-35 wt.%, based on the total weight of the catalyst, of iron and copper and at least one element comprising magnesium, zinc, lanthanum and zirconium, (ii) titania and/or magnesium aluminum hydroxycarbonate (both preferred) as catalyst carriers, and (iii) ruthenium and/or cobalt. An independent claim is included for catalyst comprising iron, potassium, copper and further component comprising magnesium, zinc, lanthanum, and zirconium, as catalyst components.
