A surface inspection apparatus (10) inspects the surface of a flexible band (11a) wound around a pair of supporting drums (12). The flexible band (11a) wound around the supporting drum (12) is irradiated with a laser (20) in a width direction. The laser (20) reflected from the flexible band (11a) is received by a receiver (16). The receiver (16) shields unnecessary light using a shielding plate (21) having a slit opening (21a). The positions of a scanner (15) and a receiver (16) are determined at inspection positions of the flexible band (11a) using a position determining unit (18). The scanner (11) and the receiver (16) can be placed to face the circular arc surface of the flexible band (11a) in order to inspect small defects such as a pin hole with excellent accuracy.
