Provided are a method for automatically switching a mode based on the status of a display device when recording is completed and a broadcast receiving apparatus adopting the same. A power control method of a broadcast receiving apparatus according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises the steps of: enabling the broadcast receiving apparatus to start recording a broadcasting program; enabling the broadcast receiving apparatus to grasp the status of a display device when the recording of the broadcasting program is completed; and enabling the broadcast receiving apparatus to control an operation mode according to the grasped status of the display device. Thus, by immediately and automatically switching a mode into a standby mode when it is confirmed that a TV is turned off after the recording of the broadcasting program is completed, energy consumption generated in an STB while a PVR function is being performed can be reduced.
