The present invention relates to a stereo matching method based on variable matching windows which determines the size and shape of matching windows by using a variance, which indicates the texture uniformity of a stereo image, and frequency information in a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) domain, and performs stereo matching. The stereo matching method based on variable matching windows comprises the following steps of: (a) receiving stereo images, and deciding one image as a reference image and the other image as an image to be processed; (b) calculating a variance which indicates the texture uniformity of the reference image inside a matching window whose center is a pixel in the reference image (hereinafter referred to as a pixel to be processed); (c) deciding the size of a mismatching window in the matching window for the pixel to be processed according to the variance; and (e) performing block matching using the mismatching window including the pixel to be processed. The stereo matching method based on variable matching windows has a higher peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and an improved operation speed compared to a method using fixed matching windows. |
