PURPOSE: To integrate gray level and color tone to perform the color separation by using a specific gray level transformation formula to not only perform the gray level transformation of the light quantity value of each picture element for each color plate but also control and adjust the color tone. CONSTITUTION: A gray level transformation part 3 based on the gray level transformation formula which integrates the adjustment of the gray level and the color tone to perform the color separation is added to a detection part 1, a color separation part 2, and an output part 4. This gray level transformation formula is expressed by yn =yH+[α(1-10<-kx> )(yS-yH)/(α-β)] where (x) is the fundamental light quantity value obtained by subtracting a light quantity value xH, which corresponds to a density information value DH in the H part of a color document picture obtained by using the characteristic curve of a recording medium, from a light quantity value xn corresponding to a density information value Dn at an arbitrary picture element point (point (n)) of the color document picture obtained in the same manner and yn , yH, and yS are dot % values set on a color print picture respectively and (α) is the surface reflection factor of a picture expressing medium for recording of the color print picture and (k) is the numerical value determined by k=θ/(xS-xH) andγis an arbitrary coefficient.
