The centre console (3) has an armrest (7) which is adjustable relative to at least one front seat. The height of the armrest can be adjusted using a linear drive (13,18). The armrest also has a gear mechanism (11,12,19,20,23) in order to allow movement in the longitudinal and transverse directions relative to the centre console. The part (11,19,23) of the mechanism for the longitudinal movement is coupled to the part (12,22) for the transverse movement by a freewheel (16,17,21,24), so that after a certain longitudinal displacement, the longitudinal displacement is superimposed on the transverse displacement.
