The method involves comparing a mean value with a quick-pass threshold or a quick-fail threshold to obtain a measurement result i.e. average value. The mean value is calculated based on the comparison, where the quick-pass threshold and/or the quick-fail threshold are determined as a function of a number of measurement results. The quick-pass threshold or the quick-fail threshold is computed based on the measurement result. The process is terminated when a system component of a combustion engine is securely judged as quick pass result or quick-fail result. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising a set of instructions to perform a method for diagnosing a system component of a combustion engine (2) an electrical memory medium comprising a set of instructions to perform a method for diagnosing a system component of a combustion engine (3) a control and/or regulating device.
