PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a counting method for counting a plurality of paper sheets free from the influence of noise arising from failure to line up the sheets neatly or from differences in folds of the sheets.SOLUTION: A plurality of folded paper sheets 1 are lined up; bright parts 5 and shadowy parts 6 are created on their back parts 2 and dented parts between the backs, respectively, by irradiating the sheets with light; an image of the sheets is picked up by a television camera 7; the resultant video signals are converted by an analog-to-digital converter circuit 9 into signals of multi-valued color intensities for different colors; signals of color intensities of constituent points constituting one horizontal scanning line are compared in color intensity with two bent lines, which serve as calculated references; a part where the constituent point is above a lower reference value, surpasses upward a higher reference value without surpassing the lower reference value downward and afterwards surpasses the lower reference value downward is counted as constituting one non-shadowy part; this comparison is repeated until the other end; and the number of non-shadowy parts is cumulatively counted to figure out the number of non-shadowy parts of the back parts of the paper sheets, namely the number of the paper sheets. |
