PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a remote control device that provides plural control modes operating in accordance with detected gesture, and a method for controlling the remote control device.SOLUTION: A remote control device 200 includes: a communication unit 210 for communicating with an external display device providing a user interface screen; a detection unit 220 for detecting operation of the remote control device 200; a mode switching button unit 231 for receiving input of a user instruction for switching a control mode; and a control unit 240 for controlling the display state of the user interface screen in accordance with the operation of the remote control device 200 detected by the detection unit 220 and for exerting control so as to operate in a pointing mode when the depression state of the mode switching button unit 231 is cancelled and as to operate in a gesture mode while the depression state of the mode switching button unit 231 is continued. The mode switching button unit 231 may be arranged at a user grip position on the back surface of the remote control device 200.
