A method for determining the pneumococcal infection status of a subject, comprising the steps of: i, providing a biological sample obtained from a subject: ii. determining the level of Iipocaiin-2 in the biological sample; and iii. comparing the level determined in (ii) with one or more pre-deterrnined reference values.
