A work plate (10), especially a cover plate for washing machines or similar appliances, comprises a scratch resistant plastic surface (12). The surface comprises an acrylic resin layer (18) which is treated with a reactive thinner, and is subjected to ultra-violet radiation. The acrylic resin layer is preferably 15-30 mu m, especially 22 mu m thick.
