The present invention provides a liquid crystal composition which has a sufficiently low viscosity (eta), a sufficiently low rotational viscosity (gamma1), a large elastic constant (K33) and a negative dielectric anisotropy (∆epsilon) with a large absolute value without lowering the refractive index anisotropy (∆n) and the nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature (Tni). The present invention also provides a liquid crystal display element of VA mode and the like, which uses the liquid crystal composition and has excellent display quality and high-speed response. A liquid crystal display element using a liquid crystal composition of the present invention has a remarkable characteristic that is high-speed response, and is particularly useful as a liquid crystal display element for active matrix driving. This liquid crystal display element is applicable to VA mode, PSVA mode, PSA mode, IPS mode or ECB mode. |
