The method involves setting a power class in an engine control unit (54). Modification of software is performed on the engine control unit by a long-distance data transmission, where alteration of power class of a motor car (50) is produced. Long-distance transmission data is transferred to the engine control unit and stored in a memory element (58). The long-distance data transmission is produced when a code is activated in the engine control unit. Local defaults of the motor car are made by depending on the long-distance data transmission. An independent claim is also included for an engine control equipment.
