PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel terpene synthase.SOLUTION: The novel terpene synthase possesses an active site pocket that includes important amino acid residues that are modified to generate a desired terpenoid reaction intermediate and a reaction product. The modification of the synthase is designed based on, for example, the three-dimensional coordinate of tobacco 5-epi-aristolochene synthase, with or without a substrate bound in the active site. Regardless of the transformation system used, a gene encoding a mutant synthase is incorporated into a gene transfer vector adapted to express the gene into a plant cell by including in the vector an expression control sequence (plant promoter regulatory element). |
